Ending HIV Stigma in the South

Precision helped Gilead work with health experts, celebrity influencers, and impacted individuals to reduce stigma and misinformation around HIV in the highest-infected communities.

Situation

The U.S. South experiences the highest numbers of HIV infections, illnesses, and deaths of any U.S. region. Misinformation and stigma around the infection often lead to people not seeking treatment and infected individuals can become ostracized. Gilead enlisted Precision to help elevate its community-based programs with key audiences, including Black LGBTQ+ people, so they could become a trusted resource for communities.

Approach

Precision amplified the voices of Gilead’s COMPASS grantees, as well as health experts, and celebrity influencers including Lil Nas X and Sheryl Lee Ralph. We also worked with individuals directly impacted by HIV to reach and educate our target audiences. Through media interviews, op-ed placements, sponsored media events, and engaging digital content across multiple channels, we changed the conversation around HIV in the South.

Results

As a result of Precision’s work, Gilead is reducing HIV-related stigma and misinformation, shifting public perception around HIV, and increasing awareness about HIV across key populations. We’ve secured dozens of print stories around Gilead and their grantees’ work to end the epidemic, and coverage in Good Morning America, Billboard, Vibe Magazine, Poz, and them. We’ve also supported community-based meetings across grantee programs to ensure local advocates can connect, collaborate, and exchange insights around tackling HIV disparities within their communities.
