Protecting the NBPA During the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Situation

As the NBPA prepared to negotiate a new CBA with the NBA in 2023, the union found itself in a critical moment. The success of the CBA would set the tone not only for NBPA’s work with the league, but also for the livelihoods of players, and for their understanding and perception of the work the NBPA does throughout the season.

Precision worked with the NBPA to build a strategic communications strategy around negotiations and worked alongside them through the successful negotiations, protecting the union and individual players’ reputations.

Approach

Precision set out with the goal to assist the NBPA in securing the most favorable terms in the CBA by: educating key audiences and influencers on bargaining priorities; persuading influential voices on the importance of the process and identified goals; and activating engagement among players, fans, and influencers during critical moments. With NBPA leadership, communications, and the player-led Executive Committee, we developed a strategy that translated contractual issues into consumable points.

Results

The NBPA successfully negotiated a CBA with the NBA that provided a host of wins for players of every level, including players yet to enter the league and retired players that paved the way. The agreement marked a major milestone in the advancement of player equity, and resulted in new commercial opportunities for union members.
