Mike Spahn is a dynamic strategist who blends expertise in communications, advocacy, policy, and campaign management. As a Partner at Precision, he helps oversee the agency across departments, drive business development, and set strategy for employee and client teams.
Mike has been at the center of policy and politics for nearly two decades. Consistently cited as one of Roll Call’s Fabulous 50 Congressional staffers, he has crafted winning strategies for some of the toughest challenges of the day.
Most recently, Mike served as chief of staff for Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the third most senior Democrat in the U.S. Senate. In this role, Spahn guided Democratic strategy from the highest levels of leadership, overseeing law making through the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, serving as senior counselor to the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee and engaging a broad spectrum of national stakeholders.
During Sen. Murray’s service as co-chair of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction and chair of the Senate Budget Committee, he helped Murray and other Democrats navigate the path toward a bipartisan compromise. This compromise paved the way for the landmark 2013 Murray-Ryan budget agreement that continues to guide Congressional negotiations on federal spending today. He also helped guide Senator Murray through two re-election campaigns: a 2016 record-setting victory and one of the toughest Senate Campaigns in the country in 2010.
Prior to serving as chief of staff, Spahn led the Office of the Democratic Conference Secretary. He also served as Floor Counsel to Assistant Democratic Leader Senator Dick Durbin. There, he aided the Whip in managing legislation on the Senate floor, coordinating with Democratic Leader’s office to implement message activities on the Senate floor and streamlining information flow through the entire Democratic Caucus.
Spahn began his career on Capitol Hill focused on communications strategy, working first in Senator Ted Kennedy’s press office and later serving as communications director to Senator Murray. He’s worked on several campaigns, including Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential run, Sen. Murray’s 2004 re-election, and Tammy Duckworth’s 2006 run for Congress in Illinois.
A native of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Spahn graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in political science. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Maureen, daughters Isabella and Harper, and dog Reilly.
